Starmer’s ‘Buy British’ Defence Plan Slammed as ‘Naïve’ by Top Analyst!

Reacting to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s vow to prioritize British-made defence equipment, Lt Col Stuart Crawford critiqued the policy as overly simplistic. Starmer aims to bolster the UK’s defence industry and economy by ensuring Ministry of Defence spending benefits British factories and workers. However, Crawford argues that procurement should focus on obtaining the best, most reliable, and NATO-compatible equipment, regardless of origin. He warns that adhering strictly to this policy would exclude crucial foreign-made assets like the F-35B fighter jets, Poseidon patrol aircraft, and Barrett sniper rifles, potentially compromising UK defence capabilities.

Reacting to Labour party leader and future Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s statement that he will change procurement rules to force the Ministry of Defence to prioritise buying British equipment, defence analyst and broadcaster Lt Col Stuart Crawford said:

‘Labour has pledged that defence investment will be directed first to British business, and defence procurement will be used to strengthen UK sovereignty, security and economic growth.

I think I understand what Starmer is trying to get at here – he wishes to bolster up Britain’s defence industrial base and boost the economy, getting MoD money to be spent on military equipment to be built in British factories by British workers.

But it’s an extremely naïve approach to be honest. The only criteria that we should apply are that it’s the best equipment for our personnel in all three armed services, is efficient, reliable, and sustainable, it’s compatible with the equipment of our NATO allies, and that it is affordable.

If we were to apply Starmer’s pledge to current British military equipment there would be no F-35B Lightning II fighter jets on our aircraft carriers, no Boeing Poseidon MRA1 maritime patrol aircraft keeping our seas safe, and no Barrett M82 sniper rifles, to mention just some equipment we get from the USA alone. Other equipment in service comes from Belgium, Germany, and other allies.
