Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral will take place on 19th September 2022. King Charles III has announced that 19th September will be a Bank Holiday.
What is the impact on employers and employees?
Entitlement
Most workers who work a 5-day week must receive at least 28 days’ paid annual leave a year known as statutory leave entitlement or annual leave. This is the equivalent of 5.6 weeks of holiday.
Bank or public holidays do not, however, have to be given as paid leave. An employer can therefore include bank holidays as part of statutory annual leave as there is no automatic statutory entitlement to time off for bank holidays.
Worker’s entitlement to a new bank holiday will depend on the existing contractual arrangements.
Check your contract of employment as the precise wording will determine the legal position.
