Last orders for standing at the bar? London’s pubs fight back

Few things are more British than standing outside a pub on a warm evening, drink in hand and chatting with friends. But Westminster City Council is considering proposals that would discourage “vertical drinking” and restrict ordering at the bar.

Supporters say the move would reduce noise and excessive drinking. Critics say it would destroy centuries of pub culture and place even more pressure on struggling businesses.

Closures continue

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticised the plans, calling them restrictive and anti-growth. The timing is certainly awkward, with 17 London pubs closing in the past three months and 366 shutting nationwide during the past year.

The proposals would encourage table service and more seating, but opponents argue this would increase staffing costs at a time when pubs are already struggling.

The battle for Soho

Critics argue that standing at the bar is an essential part of British pub culture, allowing people to meet, mingle and socialise freely.

Meanwhile, the Soho Society has pledged to oppose new licences and longer opening hours in the area.

Growth or decline?

Supporters of the industry fear the measures could accelerate the decline of one of Britain’s oldest institutions.

If pubs continue to face higher costs, fewer customers and tighter regulations, many may simply disappear on their own.
