David Hamilton celebrates Sixty years  on!

Listeners tuning in their radio sets to the BBC Light Programme on a cold January lunchtime in 1963 would have been treated to Workers Playtime and Listen With Mother. Sandwiched between them was The Beat Show, featuring the Northern Dance Orchestra and famous guest stars, recorded at the Playhouse Theatre in Manchester.

That show was to see the BBC debut of our own David Hamilton, filling in initially for the princely sum of ten guineas. He was to take on the show as his own a couple of years later.

Later, as the Light Programme evolved into Radio 1 and Radio 2, David helped draw the curtain on a radio age, hosting the last edition of Housewives’ Choice in 1967 – and Music Through Midnight in the Channel’s very last moments.

This month – Boom Radio celebrates sixty years of David’s radio career  www.professorofpop.co.uk
