With Labour’s Deputy Leader confirming that “workers with payslips” won’t face new taxes, Business111 is urging Ministers not to make the UK’s 4.3 million self-employed the next easy target.

Anyone who gets a payslip is a “working person”, Rachel Reeves’s deputy has said in the latest signal of who can expect protection from an autumn tax raid. Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the Treasury, said that the chancellor would not put up taxes on employees however much they earned, as he insisted manifesto promises did not only apply to those on “modest incomes”.

Freelancers, sole traders, and one-person businesses are vital contributors to the Government’s coffers and must be treated fairly.

Liz Barclay, founder of Business111 and the former UK Small Business Commissioner, said: “The government needs to find money urgently—but they must not kill off the geese that lay a large proportion of the golden eggs.

“We’ve seen a spike in penalties, audits, and compliance crackdowns on the self-employed in recent weeks. These aren’t big corporations with legal teams to fight their corner. They’re plumbers, photographers, yoga instructors, delivery drivers. They don’t get payslips, but they can’t just be treated as a cash cow to top up Treasury funds.”

Barclay continued: “Self-employed workers must never be treated as soft revenue. They are vital to the economy—and they can only invest and grow if treated fairly. “Penalties and procedural traps are not a substitute for honest policy debate and proportionate treatment. It’s time to stop squeezing those who keep the country running.”
