Turkiye Reignites Ancient Alliance: Military Base in Qatar Sparks New Era of Power Play in the Gulf!

Türkiye and Qatar share a historical alliance dating back centuries, with significant periods of collaboration from 1550-1670 and 1871-1916. While neighbouring Gulf states were under British protection from 1820-1971, Qatar maintained closer ties with Türkiye, which recently re-established a military base there in 2015. The alliance strengthened during the Arab Spring and amidst diplomatic tensions between Qatar and other Gulf nations from 2017-2021, with both nations supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.

Turkish President Erdogan has emphasized religious connections to bolster this partnership. The alliance extends to Africa, notably with Turkey’s presence in Somalia and Qatar’s investment in the port of Hobyo. Historical and cultural ties, dating back to ancient Greek influences in the region, provide a long-term perspective on these evolving dynamics.

The future of this alliance may hinge on Türkiye’s political landscape, particularly if a secular government comes to power.
