In the 1980s my soldiers guarded the nuclear armed US cruise missiles at Greenham Common against the female protesters.

Commenting on news that the USA is planning to store nuclear weapons again in the UK, Lt Col Stuart Crawford said:
“The USA had nukes stationed in the UK up until 2008 so it’s hardly anything new.

Whilst is is part and parcel of the west upping the ante in the face of Russian revanchism it does not mean that nuclear exchange is imminent.

 

Nuclear weapons have only been used in anger once when one side had them and the other didn’t. Since then a nuclear balance (mutually assured destruction) has kept them from being used.

The real danger is if a non or sub state actor terrorist group gets hold of one. Especially if the perpetrators don’t care about their own survival (jihadists, martyrdom etc etc).

Which brings us back to Iran! Little wonder the USA and Israel is so adamant that Tehran does not obtain nuclear weapons; there’
